London, UK
In 1927, Fritz Lang imagined a city where machines had displaced workers, surveillance was total, and the divide between those who owned technology and those consumed by it had become unbridgeable. This autumn, that film arrives in London for the first time not as a museum piece, but as a live event. The timing is not coincidental.
Vox Lumiere, the Los Angeles-based live performance company, will bring its acclaimed production of Metropolis to the UK for the first time, with a London premiere at Greenwich Theatre on 26 September 2026, as part of a 20-date national tour running September and October 2026.
The production is not a screening. Created by composer and producer Kevin Saunders Hayes, it pairs the restored 1927 film with an original rock-operatic score performed live throughout by vocalists and musicians. Hayes describes it as “rock concert meets silent film.” The film runs. The band plays. The two are inseparable.
“We’re not presenting Metropolis as a relic. The film has always been ahead of its time. This is about letting it speak in a language audiences can feel now.”
Kevin Saunders Hayes, composer and creator
The production arrives at an inflection point. Metropolis has become one of the most-cited works in contemporary discourse around artificial intelligence, economic inequality, and the future of work. Its automated labor force, its city stratified by class, its central conflict between human agency and machine control. The film is 99 years old. It has never felt more current.
Vox Lumiere has toured its productions across North America and Europe for over 20 years, performing more than 300 shows across six countries to over one million audience members. The company has received two 21st Century Filmmaker Awards for Excellence and five LA Stage Scene Awards including Best Special Event of the Year, and been the subject of a nationally televised PBS special in the United States. Hayes has scored more than 50 feature films, including two Academy Award-nominated documentaries.
“Hayes’ music is always interesting, intriguing and crosses every genre from gothic to punk to pop.”
The Daily Breeze“Mind-blowing entertainment… truly different, incredibly exciting, and definitely the ticket for one of the coolest events to be found.”
