Author Ronald Aubrey Lee announces the release of I Am Chrissy, a heartfelt memoir that tells the life story of his daughter, Chrissy Elaine Lee, in her own imagined voice. Born with microcephaly and later diagnosed with a profound intellectual disability, Chrissy never spoke, yet over 46 years she touched countless lives with her hugs, laughter, and joy.

The idea came to Lee one day when he heard Chrissy crying and rushed to hold her. She calmed in his arms, but she could not tell him what was wrong. Realizing that his communication with her was a one-way street, he decided to imagine her point of view and let Chrissy tell her own story.

Through her eyes, readers follow surgery when she was just six months old, five days of testing at Duke University Medical Center, and years of therapy led by her mother, Linda, a teacher trained in special needs education. When their school district said it had no program for a child like Chrissy, Linda pushed back, and the district soon opened a classroom for her and other children with disabilities. At seven, Chrissy moved to Whitten Center, a residential campus that became her second home.

The book overflows with joy. Chrissy rides horses in an equestrian program, is crowned prom queen, kayaks on the lake with her sister, Lori Beth, cheers on the motorcycle clubs that raised money for her campus, and never goes far without her beloved Big Red Apple. Her trademark “Chrissy Hugs” greet nurses, caregivers, and strangers alike.

Lee also writes honestly about loss: The COVID-19 restrictions that kept families apart, long hospital stays, and Chrissy’s passing on May 25, 2024, one month after her 46th birthday. Rooted in Christian faith and filled with family photographs, a foreword by Linda Lee, and family tributes, I Am Chrissy is dedicated to all individuals with disabilities and special needs and their families.

I Am Chrissy is available now on Amazon in eBook, Paperback, and Hardcover formats.
